“Vanguard Newsletter” was the publication of the Vanguard Newsletter Committee, a small Trotskyist group in New York City around Harry Turner. I know very little about this group, but judging by their newsletter, the Turnerites were a kind of indistinct “dogmatic Trotskyists 101”. Perhaps there was an empty niche waiting to be filled in the American political landscape for this kind of group, “to the left” of the SWP but less sectarian/crazy than the Spartacist League and the Workers League? If so, the niche must have been a minor one!
This issue of “Vanguard Newsletter” (really vol 4, no 3, but erroneously called vol 4, no 2 on the front page) contains an article on the war in Indochina, a defense of Trotsky's Proletarian Military Policy, an article on the Labor Party slogan and a polemic against the Spartacist League. There is also a protest against the Workers League, the supporters of which had apparently physically attacked the Turnerite-dominated Committee for Rank and File Caucuses.
The publication is vaguely interesting, but no more.
