It´s almost as if some other approach is needed.

Underreported

A very interesting article from 2019. Also mentions certain salient events in 2015. What makes the piece interesting is that Russia´s hybrid warfare involving migrants was well known (and feared) by the cognoscenti long before the 2021 Belarus border crisis and the 2022 Russian attack on Ukraine. Yet, it went underreported in the mainstream media.

We all know why.

Satanization

So Putin pardoned a man who was sentenced to life in jail for having tortured and killed two young girls under ritualistic forms. He ate them, too. Pardoned, sent to the war in Ukraine...and now he´s home, a free man, after only six months at the front.

To those pro-Russian Alt Righters who refer to the current West as the Were-West: What do you call the above? Werewolf?!

Mongols, Chechens, Central Africans and now were-men. Putin surely has an interesting way of "defending the true West" and "the White race" from Satanism and Nazism...

Adventure

Here´s a thought. Or more than one. What if the Israel-Palestine conflict simply has no solution? What if the climate crisis doesn´t have a solution either? Have you ever reflected over this?

Or the geopolitical conflict between Russia and the rest of the world. Or the Crimean conflict, which seems to have started in 2014 BCE. I believe there were turf wars in Palestine back then, too...

Has humanity ever decisively managed to solve any of its problems?

Perhaps we just have to realize that we live on a dangerous planet. Let the adventure begin!

When the Plymouth Brethren decide your foreign policy

John Nelson Darby:
 real Secretary of State?

It´s logical to support both Ukraine and Israel, since they are both pro-Western. Or to oppose both, if you also oppose the West.

But what on earth is the justification for wanting to abandon Ukraine, while very strongly supporting Israel? This seems to have become the "mainline" position among American conservatives, including some Trump supporters, perhaps even including Trump himself.

This position is clearly irrational, for a number of reasons, but since it´s often argued from the Bible, it should be pointed out that it´s clearly "non-Biblical" too, since Christianity very early abandoned an exclusive Israelite-Jewish orientation in favor of preaching among the Gentiles. And even the Jewish Christians presumably believed that the Kingdom wasn´t of this world.

No Christian faction seem to have supported the Jewish uprisings against the Romans in 66 - 73 AD or 132 AD.

What a pity Ukraine isn´t mentioned in the Bible. But note the bizarre fact that the Dispensationalists often claim that *Russia* is! But apparently what counts is the attack on Israel by the Prince of Rosh, not any move against Ashkenaz (!) or whatever the Biblical authors called the region north of the Black Sea...

Scratching my head.

Mistakes were made, but not by me

A certain Swedish tabloid (yes, it was Aftonbladet) recently asked - in a frontpage headline - why there are so many strange rumors about Putin.

I. Beg. You. Pardon?!

Because *the tabloids* are spreading them far and wide, obviously. And probably making them up, too. I didn´t bother reading the article, but here´s a wild guess: after almost two years of war, all the speculations about Putin being dead and replaced with a body double are looking increasingly silly. So it´s time to backtrack a bit...

Oh, and speaking of that. Aftonbladet also asks if the conflict in the Ukraine risks becoming overshadowed by the war between Israel and Hamas. Once again, the projection is overwhelming. Or perhaps underwhelming? Last time I looked, Aftonbladet no longer mentions every tiny "strategically important" village retaken by the Ukrainians, at least not that prominently.

Friends again

So Robert Fico of the "Social Democractic" Smer party did manage to become Slovakia´s new Prime Minister, heading a coalition government of Smer, Hlas (a similar party) and the right-wing nationalist SNS.

Fico is often seen as pro-Russian, and has indeed promised to stop all military aid from Slovakia to Ukraine. It will be interesting to see how this will affect the EU´s attempts to sanction Russia (and perhaps Hungary).

And for how long will Fico´s cabinet last? The Hlas party is led by a former ally of Fico turned rival, Peter Pellegrini...and now ally again?

I also note that Fico has promised not to take Slovakia out of the EU and NATO, but who knows how much mischief they can cause while still being a member-state. After all, Hungary haven´t left the EU and NATO either!

More questions than answers...

Standoff at the Lavra

Some further turbulence on our way down...

The parliament of Ukraine demands that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) be banned for ties with Moscow. The UOC claims to support Ukraine in the war with Russia, and has also declared organizational independence from the Moscow Patriarchate (which heads the Russian Orthodox Church). However, Ukrainian intelligence services claim that the UOC are merely dissimulating. It also seems that the Russian Orthodox Church has refused to recognize the autocephaly of the UOC, claiming it´s still under their jurisdiction!

Apparently, there is another Orthodox Church body in the country, known as the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which is more explicitly anti-Russian and recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Indeed, the Moscow Patriarchate seems to have broken their ties with "Constantinople" over the latter´s recognition of the OCU. So I assume the OCU can still work freely in Ukraine...

In case you need to know.

End of the rope

A Biden spokesperson recently said that aid to Ukraine is "at the end of the rope", and that it isn´t indefinite. Just what Putin wants to hear. And just as I feared...

Meanwhile, the United States seem willing and eager to aid Israel even though the Israelis has declared that they can defend themselves alone. And since Iran is probably behind the Hamas attacks (Hamas "helpfully" pointing in that direction themselves), chances are that we will soon see a major war between that nation and the US.

Since the US only barely "won" the Iraqi war and lost in Afghanistan, how does any of this help in the geopolitical confrontation with Russia and China?

Exactly.

And then we have all the crazy conservatives in America who evidently see this entire thing as "Biblical" somehow. Maybe somebody should tell them that "Gog and Magog" is Russia!

This could end even more badly than I expected just the other week or so.

Better off without them

Credit: Oleg Bor

Some stray thoughts on our Turkish predicament...

I long wondered why on earth the United States tolerates Turkey´s and Hungary´s rather obvious attempts to bloc Swedish NATO membership. Which only plays into the hands of Russia, with which NATO is presently involved in a proxy war in Ukraine.

My best current guess is bureaucratic inertia. NATO coyly calculates that no NATO member-state will ever be attacked, cuz nuclear deterrent or something. And the United States can fix their own specific problems by going it alone. Proxy wars, targeted assassinations, that kind of stuff. So the apparatchiks might very well wheel and deal with the likes of Erdogan, cuz who cares? Fill in complaint about lucrative military-industrial complex contracts here! As for Hungary, well, read up on how the EU "works" sometimes (or, really, don´t).

All these applecarts were upset when Russia launched its full-scale unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Suddenly, Sweden and Finland wanted to join NATO. And the United States wanted them in. There is just one little problem. Yes, you´ve guessed it: Turkey (and their quasi-conquered little Hungarian vilayet). The old wheeling and dealing approach doesn´t work anymore. Instead, Erdogan´s notorious multi-vectoralism has pushed NATO further and further towards a split. The recent events in the Transcaucasus and now the Hamas pogroms in southern Israel may be the Rubicon. Turkey clearly doesn´t want to line up behind the United States and Israel (a "partner" to NATO). Suggesting they won´t clear Sweden for NATO membership this time around either.

Perhaps it´s time for the other NATO member-states to finally realize that geopolitical realities have changed. Yes, maybe it´s time to de-ratify Türkiye´s NATO membership? Make no mistake: it would be a huge blow to the alliance and its "southern flank". But the damage has already been done. In the long run, and maybe even in the short, NATO is better off without being blocked by a Putinversteher heading a quasi-Islamist autocracy with geopolitical goals clearly incompatible with those of the Western world.

What is the alternative? Regime change, perhaps. But that´s hardly on the table. Wheeling and dealing with the mercurial Erdogan if and when Putin decides to test NATO´s resolve by taking the Suwalki corridor or bomb some island off the Swedish coast?

It´s time for Erdogan to chose. Once and for all. Otherwise, we´re better off without a "southern flank" that for all intents and purposes may already have fallen...
