Buddha apparently preached to the devas (including Sakka) in deva-loka, and then descended back to Earth on three staircases made of gold, silver and jewels (I think). 

The Christians - without realizing it - turned the Buddha into a saint, and even retold the Christianized story of Siddharta Gautama to the Japanese?! 

Also: the crazy Ajivikas and the atheist-materialist Carvakas, two groups competing with the early Dharma for attention.
