Not sure what the Director of National Intelligence really does that the CIA or FBI can´t do themselves, but since Gabbard is (as far as I know) still a member of "Science of Identity", I wouldn´t let her near any classified information. How do we know it won´t end up in the hands of Chris Butler?!

Tulsi Gabbard is a controversial American politician
and political commentator whose main claim to fame is probably her 2019-2020 primary
election campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Gabbard destroyed
Kamala Harris´ presidential bid before the voting even started, but as we all
know, Harris staged a comeback later. Still, it *is* intriguing that Harris´
attempt to become POTUS in her own right was upset by a “fringe” candidate like
Gabbard!
Supposedly a progressive leftist, Gabbard veered rather
strongly towards the populist right, eventually leaving the Democratic Party
altogether in 2022 for unknown pastures. Judging by the presentations linked
above, Gabbard may never have been a leftist at all, and perhaps deliberately
prettified her past.
It´s been known for a long time that Gabbard had
contacts with Hindu nationalists (she even met Modi). Her Hindu beliefs are derived
from a breakaway group from the Hare Krishna movement, known as Science of Identity.
Both her parents (not just her mother) are members of Science of Identity, and
so is Gabbard herself. The group is based on Hawaii, where the Gabbards live. The
founder-leader of this group, Chris Butler, is a really raving homophobe. So is
Mark Gabbard, Tulsi´s father, who claims to be a Catholic but is actually a member
of Butler´s organization. While it´s not super-secret that Gabbard is somehow
connected to Butler´s people, she has tried to downplay both the connection and
essentially denied her guru´s homophobia.
The narrator of the videos linked above is a Canadian counter-cultist with somewhat eclectic spiritual beliefs, Henri Jolicoeur. As a very young man, Jolicoeur was a member of the Hare Krishna movement (the ISKCON) and worked closely with none other than Shrila Prabhupada himself. Indeed, he was tasked with spying on Chris Butler´s ISKCON temple in Hawaii! It seems Butler was creating his very own, shall we say, cult following already back then. Yes, Jolicoeur regards Science of Identity as a dangerous cult, prompting Butler´s lawyers to sue him for libel in both Hawaii and Quebec as a result (the present status of the lawsuit is unclear to me).
The videos are interesting,
not just for what they may reveal about Gabbard or Butler, but also due to the
narrator´s reminiscences. Judging by other uploads on his channel, Jolicouer
knows all of the ISKCON “fallen gurus” who took over the Hare Krishna after
Prabhupada´s death…and he despises all of them (or almost all). There is some
other interesting info of a counter-cultist nature on the channel too, so stay
tuned for more links!
As for Tulsi Gabbard, she did have an intriguing
ability to politically attract a rather motley crew of people. Among people who
had positive things to say about her were Alt Right cyber-demon and citizen´s
reporter Mike Cernovich, pro-populist leftist Jimmy Dore and perennial kind-of-liberal
gadfly Michael Tracey (who even endorsed her for president). I was interested
in her politics, too, but things change and so on.
Presented her for all it may be worth.
It´s become something of a gimmick here on the blog to post pics of particularly well-endowed young women everytime a Chinese spy balloon enters US air space or an American bank collapses. However, this has now become so common that the blog might run the risk of looking, shall we say, highly suggestive.
So from now on I will instead post pics of rare birds whenever the events mentioned above take place. I expect this to be something of a weekly feature in the months and years ahead...

“The Real Hunt for Red October” is a 2021 US documentary about Tom Clancy, his popular novel “The Hunt for Red October”, the film based on the novel, and certain Cold War incidents which may have inspired the author. Much of the content is speculation. Still, it´s an interesting watch!
In 1968, the
Soviet submarine K-129 sunk in the Pacific Ocean, at a location northwest of
Hawaii. K-129 had nuclear capability, and had strayed a long way from the usual
Soviet patrol area. The Soviet navy attempted to locate the sub, but since it searched
in the regular patrol area, failed to do so. This suggests (but doesn´t
conclusively prove) that K-129 had “gone rogue”, and that not even the Soviet
military knew what the submarine was really up to.
Eventually,
the United States located the badly damaged submarine at the bottom of the
ocean floor and attempted to salvage it. The salvage operation, which was of
course a well kept secret, was organized and financed by the CIA. The agency
used “Glomar Explorer”, an ostensible drillship owned by billionaire Howard Hughes,
as their cover. In 1974, “Glomar Explorer” managed to retrieve parts of K-129,
including the bodies of six dead Soviet crewmembers. In 1975, the US media
exposed the project, but the proper authorities declined to comment.
While both
Soviets and Americans acknowledge the basic story today (the documentary even
shows a film of the burial of the dead Soviet crew), much still remain classified,
including the exact location where K-129 sunk. Conspiracy theories abound, and “The
Real Hunt for Red October” prominently features Kenneth Sewell, author of the
book “Red Star Rogue”, who argues for a scenario even scarier than in Tom Clancy´s
novel. Sewell speculates that K-129 had been infiltrated by a secret KGB faction
which wanted to launch Chinese-type nuclear missiles against the United States
(perhaps Pearl Harbor at Hawaii), thereby tricking the US and China into a nuclear
war, with the Soviet Union staying out and eventually taking over the world. This
sounds extremely farfetched, to be honest! Still, if K-129 really sunk far
outside “its” patrol area, it *is* strange that the Soviets didn´t know about
it, searching for the vessel in all the wrong places…
“The Real
Hunt for Red October” also speculates about Tom Clancy´s sources. Apparently,
his novels contain a lot of classified information. The documentary suggests
that somebody in the intelligence community was feeding him material, perhaps
as part of a propaganda war against the Soviet Union. The Americans *wanted*
the Soviets to know how far ahead the United States were in military technology,
and putting such info in popular spy novels was a clever way of “hiding in
plain sight”. Ronald Reagan´s Secretary of the Navy, John Lehman, hints at such
a possibility when interviewed by the film crew.
Of course,
it´s always possible that “The Real Hunt for Red October” is also brokered by
some insider faction…

"Earth´s Tropical Islands" is a joint BBC-PBS documentary series in three parts about Madagascar, Borneo and Hawaii, respectively. I just watched the last episode. While mostly about the flora and the fauna of the Hawaiian island chain, we also get some insights into the geology of the place (which is quite fascinating). A little anthropology has been thrown in too, but not much.
Featured animals include a "true bug" that lives on a chilly lava plateu and scavenges other dead insects, large fruit flies hunted by a carnivorous caterpillar, the white tern (it nests in the middle of Honolulu), the monk seal, and the world´s oldest bird specimen, the Laysan albatross "Wisdom", which may be about 70 years old. Invasive species plague the island chain, for instance an African species of chameleon.
All three episodes of this series are worth watching, in my opinion.

"Godzilla" is a 2014 US film in the so-called MonsterVerse franchise, which features the two "classical" monstrosities Godzilla (Gojira) and King Kong in various combinations. In this particular flick, the primordial stegosaurid Godzilla is awakened by a deep sea expedition, and the nuclear tests at Bikini Island were supposedly attempts to kill this monster! When this fails, the US government sets up the ultra-secret Project Monarch to study the bizarre creature. Just as well, since even more monstrosities are hiding beneath the Earth surface, including two MUTOs or Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms! (Is somebody making fun of the UFO subculture, I wonder?)
The MUTOs, who have an obvious family resemblance to the Devil himself, want to mate and breed some more abominable creatures, destroying a Japanese nuclear power plant, Honolulu and Las Vegas (sic) in the process, before descending on an unsuspecting San Fransisco. Luckily, Gojira turns out to be on our side (more or less), and in the chaos and mayhem following the MUTO mating ritual, the stegosaurid seems to be the only thing that stands between us and a mass extinction event of Homo freakin´ sapiens. Apparently, "the king of the monsters" is Mother Nature´s way of "restoring the balance", sorely upset by the rampage of the trysting gargoyles.
I was going to complain about the major plot holes (one of them involving an encased nuclear device), but after the botched COVID response in the real world, the illogical chaos in "Godzilla" doesn´t seem so unrealistic anymore, I mean, the film almost comes across as a documentary! Must be the first time I get *that* feeling when watching a film where more money was used for the special effects than for the script...
I already reviewed "Kong: Skull Island", but I haven´t seen the later films in this series, one of which apparently pits Gojira against the over-sized gorilla in some kind of ultimate fighting of the ages.
And while it probably doesn´t mean anything at all, I do think it´s funny to see a sci fi production involving hideous creatures from the bowels of our own planet, rather than the (obviously unrealistic) space aliens who litter every other SF flick!
Three stars?
Gabbard is too weird and mercurial (in the bad sense of the term) for my political tastes, but her attempts to market herself as a kind of babe version of Donald Trump makes her say interesting things from time to time. Such as here...
