Jag är ärligt talat "neutral" i första världskriget, men som ett slags protest mot den (påstådda) vurmen för Österrike-Ungern i vissa kretsar, så publicerar jag härmed ovanstående lilla bild. Den som har öron att höra med, den höre!

So the United States voted "no" to a pro-Ukrainian resolution at the UN General Assembly. Other nations voting "no" included Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua and Hungary. But also Israel - probably because Netanyahu doesn´t want to anger Trump in case the war against Hamas flares up again (which it most certainly will). 

Later, the UN Security Council adopted a "neutral" resolution on the Ukrainian war introduced by the United States. My understanding is that France and the UK (which have veto powers) simply abstained from voting, rather than pick an *actual* fight with the Trump administration. This is obviously significant, since the Security Council is the where the real decisions are made (as far as the UN is concerned). 

It seems the *really* real decisions will be made during talks between Trump and Putin god knows where...    

Swedish vampire

 

"Secrets of the Dead: Field of Vampires" is a somewhat macabre documentary about vampire panics in 17th and 18th century Central Europe. It centers on recent archeological excavations of a burial field outside the obscure village of Pien in Poland. Many graves were found to be disturbed in an apparent attempt to hinder the dead from rising again as vampires. 

The film-makers have decided to concentrate on an unknown female nicknamed Zosia, who seems to have died a natural death at the age of 18. She was buried with a padlock attached to her foot, a superstitious attempt to keep her "good soul" from leaving the body. If it would do so, its evil double would take over! For some reason, the grave was opened at a later date and the padlock found to be broken. To stop Zosia from rising again as a vampire, a scythe was placed over her neck, presumably to behead her if she ever tried. The remains buried in some of the other graves were treated even worse. For instance, a dead child had gotten half of its body removed. 

The archeologists speculate that Zosia may have suffered from seizures when alive, which would have marked her out from "normal" people. Somewhat surprisingly, she must have been rich. Analysis of her teeth suggests that she wasn´t a local, and may actually have been Swedish. During the 17th century, Swedish troops invaded Poland and attacked Torun (the largest town in the area where Pien is located). Could *this* explain why Zosia was suspected of being a vampire? A wealthy woman from an enemy nation who behaves strangely. We sense a mixture of envy, hatred and fear.  

However, since at least one third of the graves at the "vampire field" had been disturbed, something else was surely going on. Perhaps some kind of mass hysteria or should we call it vampire panic? The docu mentions a very bizarre case from 18th century Moravia of just such an occurence. In 1755, corpses were dug up and put on trial (!) in the small village of Svobodné Hermanice (Frei Hermersdorf). Found guilty, the corpses were then taken to a nearby forest and burned. Perhaps vampire scares had something to do with life becoming harsher during the Little Ice Age and the increasingly more deadly wars during the Early Modern Period? This was also the high tide of the witch-burnings.

"Secrets of the Dead: Field of Vampires" ends with a Swedish forensic expert reconstructing the face of Zosia, which for some reason becomes very emotional to the Polish archeologists. Personally, I just shook the head at the "human condition" while watching this. For isn´t that what vampires really are? A kind of de-humanized humans. And a very human superstition...

No idea what Remix News is, but probably a pro-Hungarian/pro-Russian right-wing nationalist publication (or even a publication actually based in Hungary). 

In the article below, Remix argues that Ukraine faces a "great replacement" after the war, as immigrants from poor Third World nations will replace Ukrainians who have been killed, maimed or left the country never to return. Also, Ukrainian women have too few children. Only 7 children per 10 Ukrainian women are born. 22 children per 10 women would be needed to keep Ukraine´s previous population level.

Interesting. And perhaps even true.

My scary Sweden

 

"Mitt Sverige" (My Sweden) is a nature documentary by Hungarian Zoltan Török. His Sweden turns out to be the scariest part! Think icy islands in the Gulf of Bothnia (?) featuring colonies of cormorants, eagles fighting each other, and ravens harassing seal cubs. 

Later, Zoltan and his family go trekking somewhere in Lapland, with its vast and seemingly empty hill tracts and woods. Or not so empty, since we do get to see bears, foxes, lynxes and wolverines. At one point, the documentary becomes unintentionally funny, as Zoltan says that the Sami (Laps) live in harmony with nature...while the camera shows how they herd reindeer with snowmobiles! I assume these are powered by gasoline?

But sure, if you want a good argument to stay indoors in some safe burb in southern Sweden (the civilized part), I suppose "Mitt Sverige" could be worth watching! 

  

Arresteringsorder

 

Har Cantwell smuttat för mycket på rödvinet, eller vad? Visst, Netanyahu kommer självklart inte att besöka Sverige så länge "arresteringsordern" gäller, men att han skulle utlämnas till Haag i den händelse ett gripande faktiskt bleve möjligt (vid en nödlandning på Arlanda på väg till USA?) är givetvis uteslutet. Om inte Sverige vill trigga den största diplomatiska krisen sedan...jag vet inte när. Observera också att Cantwell erkänner att det är regeringen som fattar beslut om eventuell utlämning, vilket givetvis betyder att den nuvarande debatten om regeringens "velande" inte är helt bakvänd...

Och varför kallar han Viktor Orbans inbjudan för "fåneri"? Tror han att ICC kan skicka tungt beväpnade kommandosoldater till Budapest för att arrestera Netanyahu om Orban vägrar följa EU-direktiven bläh bläh?

Netanyahu kommer aldrig att bli arresterad och förd till Haag, och det kommer Putin inte bli heller. ICC:s "arresteringsorder" är antingen symbolpolitik eller en typ av de facto diplomatiska sanktioner. Vilket väl är ungefär samma sak. ICC är ett lika stort skämt som Nationernas Förbund. Och för att klargöra: jag stödjer Israel men inte Ryssland...

So Viktor Orban wouldn´t arrest Netanyahu if he showed up in Hungary, indeed, Orban has actually invited the Israeli PM to Budapest to protest the ICC´s recent "arrest warrant". 

Orban´s multi-vectoralism never ceases to amaze me. I mean, is this the same Orban to blocked with Hamas-supporting Turkey to delay Sweden´s NATO membership as long as possible? But sure, I suppose they are "right" this U-turn around.

As for the ICC, they are a bigger joke than the League of Nations. Maybe just as well, all things considered!

The real problem isn´t "Czechia" (apparently the new name for the Czech Republic in English). Try India. Or China. 

That being said...it *is* interesting that the Czechs still buy most of their oil from Russia, given the fact that their present administration claims to be pro-Western. 

Reminds me of how Vaclav Klaus pretended to be a Milton Friedman-inspired neo-liberal...only to heavily subsidize the Czech economy and establish friendly ties with guess who...yepp, a somewhat younger version of citizen Putin in the Kremlin. 

The traditional anti-German geopolitics of the Czechs always had a pronounced pro-Russian tilt, and here we go again, it seems...

Some musings by the Supreme Dark Lord on the recent Israeli attacks on Hizbollah in Lebanon. 

He obviously has a point, since attacks of this kind are unlikely to have any military significance, and the psychological impact on a militant cadre organization of religious fanaticos (as opposed to civilians) probably isn´t very large either. Add to that the global distrust against high tech gadgets that might follow in their wake. Tech bubble, anyone?

The transhumanist agenda was probably DOA anyway, but I´m sure the cultists will continue for another 20 years or so, until they drop dead, their heads preserved for posterity in a cryo-chamber somewhere on a melting glacier in Greenland, but I´m talking too much...

EU and NATO are jokes. The presidency of the Council of the European Union is currently held by Hungary. The first thing Hungary´s perpetual leader Viktor Orbán did was to visit Moscow and Beijing! And yes, this is the same Orbán who for two years blocked Swedish NATO membership...

Can you imagine NATO and EU actually defending themselves against Russia? LOL. Or against anyone really, if they can´t even stop one of their smallest member-nations from literally betraying the very purposes of these alliances? 

We´re dealing with stingless, worthless bureaucrats, unprepared for the new times. Time for a change, perchance? Maybe if we cut the EU apparat, we can finally finance our military, I mean, just an idea.

I kind of like Hungary´s new EU slogan "Make Europe great again". What a pity it comes from a people historically allied with the Ottoman Empire...

Populistisk gryning?

 

Hur många röster fick nationalister och populister i EU-valen? Från Hübinettes blogg. Vad som inte framgår är förändringar sedan tidigare val, samt valdeltagandet. 

Sedan kan man ju ifrågasätta Hübinettes definitioner i vissa fall. Varför kallar han slovakiska Smer eller tjeckiska CSSD för "höger"? Smer är snarast vänsterpopulister, CSSD är socialdemokrater. Visst, CSSD har anklagats för att vara pro-ryska, men i så fall är det tjeckiska kommunistpartiet rimligtvis också "högerradikala" enligt denna definition! Och om Smer är med på listan, varför är inte slovakiska Hlas det också? Hlas är en klon av Smer. 

Och varför är ungerska Jobbik med på listan? De är höger, visst, men de är mot Orbán. Och så vidare. Om CSSD är med för att de är pro-ryska, borde Jobbik således inte vara med eftersom de är anti-ryska...

That being said...still an interesting contribution.
