This is “Volume II, Part 1b” of V G Heptner's
super-encyclopedia “Mammals of the Soviet Union”, left unfinished at his death
in 1975. Originally a Russian-language work in three volumes, the English
translation morphed into five volumes. This particular volume covers the
mustelids (“weasels”) and the raccoon, a North American species introduced in some
parts of the Soviet Union. The amount of information found in this work is
staggering almost beyond belief, and the reference section includes sources
published in such godforsaken places as Minsk, Khabarovsk, Tomsk and Cambridge,
USA. If you are a budding zoologist, or a little weasel, perhaps this is the
book just for you?
