National Torture Hour

My review of the Melody Festival 2014 CD.

So here we go again, with the Melody Festival a.k.a. Annual Torture Hour. This is the CD, not the DVD, but I nevertheless feel like complaining about the sexist/homophobic jokes of the show hosts (this in a TV program heavily supported by the gay community!), the constant confusion of female show host Nour El-Refai (she's only 26, yet looks senile), the completely off topic intermission acts, the technical hiccups, the vote rigging, the...blaaaaaaaah.

OK, I admit it, not even a lot of luscious candy made somewhere in Europe's least ethically oriented food factory could save the day. However, being a good Swedish citizen-robot, I bought the CD this year, too. I admit that many of the songs are better if you just listen to them, without seeing the performers (or the show hosts, or the intermission acts, or the candy).

As usual, the variety of styles is staggering: Hannibal-the-Cannibal-inspired heavy metal, ABBA-inspired gay disco, queered arena rock, and a smattering of other genres you didn't even know existed. The only thing sorely missing this year seems to be regular Swedish schlager... And yes, ESC winner Helena Paparizou is featured somewhere on this album, like anybody gives a damn.

Buy this together with those oversized candy gummy bears I pretended to review a way back, and you might actually muddle through. As for us, we still have to endure the finale next Saturday on Swedish TV.
Blaaaaah....
