Not even “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”, often
regarded as the ultimate PC/SJW/tumblr/anti-Gamergate show, has escaped the
lashes of crazy armchair slacktivists.
Writing in “Ms.” magazine, Kathleen Richter calls the show “My Little Homophobic, Racist, Smart-shaming Pony”. The article, available on the web, is richly entertaining. The fact that the only tomboyish pony has a rainbow mane, must mean that she's a lesbian. Rather than seeing this as positive and inclusive (a gay character in a children's cartoon!), Richter says that it's – wait for it - homophobic. Oookay…
The fact that two grey-skinned ponies serve the white pony princess means…guess what? “How can we expect kids to grow up rejecting racism if they watch shows like this”, wonders Ms Richter. That's why White kids turn racist in 21st century America – they watch grey animated ponies. Well, back in the days, it had more to do with tangible material benefits, like being able to sit in the front seats of the busses in Selma. But what do I know?
Perhaps Richter's article is parody. And then, perhaps not. Or perhaps Richter doesn't really care about a children's show either way, which would explain the frivolous tone of her hit piece. The creator of “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”, Lauren Faust, wrote in response that the grey ponies are amply paid for their services (she can't have written that with a straight face!) and that the land of Equestria is co-ruled by a purple pony. The skin color of her servants wasn't specified.
:D
And no, I don't take Richter's article very seriously, except in the sense that her attack on “My Little Pony” says a lot about the present Zeitgeist. Politically correct activists verbally assault each other, it's impossible to tell their tweets from irony and parody, and why the hell is a bunch of rainbow-maned animated ponies an issue anyway?! Meanwhile, the world is literally burning, not to mention being filled to the brim with real racism, sexism, homophobia and, I suppose, smart-shaming (that one is usually a liberal preserve).
I'm not a brony, but being reborn as a grey-skinned servant of Princess Celestia of Equestria suddenly doesn't seem as such a bad prospect…
Untergang des Abendlandes, anyone?
