Into the darkness or out of the light?

This is a review of the 2008 Melody Festival CD.

This is the 2008 edition of Melodifestivalen, the most popular song contest in Sweden. Unfortunately, 2008 was not a good year for this event. Charlotte Perelli's winning song "Hero", which closes this CD compilation, feels like a great classic á la Händel or Bach, after the slow torture of the rest of the 32 songs. Apart from "Hero", there are only a few really god pop songs, such as BWO's "Lay your love on me", a gay disco tune that actually mentions the Peace Corps - shades of the Village People in the navy? However, the BWO song shade into insignificance among all the daft, silly, boring and occasionally outrightly moronic compositions, with bizarre titles like "Kebabpizza Slivovitza", "Razborka" or "Izdajice".

Kebab...what exactly?

The most shocking moment in 2008 came when the super-diva Carola was voted out in favour of Nordman, who sang a song about 17th century witch-burnings, complete with fire effects on stage. You can't see the actual fires (or the witches) at this CD, obviously, but you can listen to the song. If you remove those earplugs you just put right in, that is.

Well, at least we have Charlotte Perelli!

Out of the light, like a star, like a heroooo.....

;-)
