“Dune” is uneasily positioned
between the charming turkey films of the 1970's and the weird David Lynch
productions of the 1980's and 1990's. If that's your cup of tea, you're
probably going to love this flick. If not, brace yourself for a cannibalistic
“baron” who incomprehensibly floats around, “Guild navigators” who make Jabba
the Hutt look like a beauty queen, really huge worms, the obligatory telepaths
and empaths, and a guy who thinks he's the Prophet Muhammad (or something to that
effect). Some scenes remind me of “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, others conjure up
memories of “Star Wars”. Kyle MacLachlan and several other Lynch-oriented
actors are involved, and so are Patrick Steward, Max von Sydow and Sting (sic).
Sorry, guys, but this “space opera jihad” will only get two stars from me. And no, I never read the novel…
