"Butterflies of the
Holarctic Region. Part 2" is the second of three books on the true
butterflies of North America, North Africa, Europe and large parts of Asia.
This volume continues the treatment of Satyridae and also covers some of the
Nymphalidae. The book could be used as a complement to real field guides, but
is probably difficult to use on its own. All specimens are pinned, no
vernacular names are included, and the species presentations are extremely
short. The entire volume feels like a collection of plates, or an exhibition
catalogue for the British Museum, rather than a "real" book. However,
I don't deny that it's competently done. The butterfly effect? Bernard
D'Abrera's work, which in its entirety covers over ten volumes, is probably the
only illustrated reference to butterflies which covers all geographical regions
in some detail. Lewis' "Butterflies of the World" feels like an
abridged paperback edition by comparison. All being said, I give this book four
stars.
