This is the third part of "Butterflies of the Neotropical
region", a curious super-encyclopedia in God knows how many volumes. Most
of the butterflies shown are from the voluminous collection of the British
Museum. This volume covers the Neotropical (South and Central American) species
of Brassolidae, Acraeidae and part of Nymphalidae. Of these, the owl
butterflies of the family Brassolidae are perhaps the most well known.
The specimens shown on the plates are aesthetic and exotic, even when "pinned", but the book is nevertheless very frustrating due to short species presentations and very little information overall. It looks like an exhibition catalogue. This is a collector's item if you're crazy about butterfly books, but no more. Four stars...for the butterflies!
