Coyote ugly

This documentary shows “evolution in action”, but probably a form of evolution most people would rather be without. Throughout most of its range, the wolf is an adversary to the coyote. The only place in North America where wolves and coyotes regularly interbreed is the Algonquin National Park in Canada. Unfortunately, the hybrid offspring is both viable and fertile, and has spread across eastern North America. These “coywolves” have established themselves as apex predators in several urban areas, including Toronto and (more recently) New York City. A coywolf has actually been captured in Central Park!

They are not afraid of people and scientists fear that they are getting smarter by each new generation. Yet, nothing is done to cull or exterminate the population. Meanwhile in Chicago, the regular coyote has also established itself in urban parks. To me, both the coyote and the hybrid look like dogs, so I would probably get in trouble jogging in a park in Canada…

I don't mind what coyotes and wolves do in their Algonquin National Park bedrooms, but I certainly don't want them sneaking around outside mine! People, wake up, time to grab that NRA-approved rifle of yours and take a firm stand…
