A review of "Meditteranean Flowers" by Marjorie Blamey
This is an informal sequel to Marjorie Blamey's field
guide to the plants of Britain and Northern Europe. It looks pretty similar,
except that the color plates and species presentations aren't on facing pages
(an annoying feature of too many “field” guides). Many species aren't
illustrated, except with black-and-white drawings of diagnostic characters.
Those that are, form the usual impenetrable jungle-like maze that bewildered us
already in the British field guide. This woman must have vascular plants on her
mind! The guide covers species found along the Mediterranean coast and
immediate hinterland up to 1000 meters of altitude, thus excluding high
altitude species. Most Northern European species found in the Mediterranean
area have not been included, suggesting that the guide is intended for tourists
from Britain. Not really my cup of joe. This review is of the 1993 edition,
BTW.
