A review of "Otherkin: Journals of Discovery"
Much of the “Otherkin” or “Therian” material available
here seems to be of an erotic nature, at least judging by the covers, which
show more nude humans than shape-shifting furry animals! This short story,
apparently the first in a trilogy, is no exception and sounds almost like
parody. Think Chuck Tingle. The main character is a human living in an isolated
city on the brink of Apocalypse. During an exploratory tour in the surrounding
wilderness, he comes across an “Otherkin” who turns out to be a nude female
with blue skin and a plant-like disposition. Except in matters erotic, where
she rather suspiciously resembles every other female in every other erotic
story you ever read. The man isn't much different, either, and quickly forgets
his post-apocalyptic musings for steamier stuff. Good grief, Branford. I
probably won't be reading the sequels, and will only give this exercise in
plant pornography two stars.
