This is yet
another volume of “Nationalnyckeln”, a Swedish biological encyclopedia. So far,
17 volumes have been published. This one covers all 216 species of ray-finned
fishes (a subgroup of bony fishes) found in Sweden. Or rather in Swedish
waters! Some are spectacular, such as the Opah, the Oarfish, John Dory, the
Ocean Sunfish and the Swordfish. Others can lead to spectacular controversies.
Something tells me it's not permissible to start a brawl with a fisherman over
the exact difference between a “sill” and a “strömming” (in English, an
Atlantic herring and a Baltic herring). The red herring is not included in this
volume, however…
