While interesting on a purely factual
level, "Myths and Legends of the Second World War" has a disturbing political tendency. I get the impression that
James Hayward is either an appeaser (like Neville Chamberlain), a naïve liberal
who believes in some kind of “nice” or “clean” war, or a covert leftist of the
kind who really opposed both sides in both world wars (cuz British Empire or
something). In reality, most of the bad-bad things done by our side complained
about in this book were either inevitable, necessary or both. Hayward is
apparently against Putin's Russia, but Putin is laughing at him already!
