This is an English translation of “Sagan
om Vasa”, Bertil Almquist's flippant fairytale version of the most notorious
disaster in the history of Swedish shipping. Yes, that would be the 1628 sinking
of the would-be flagship of the Swedish fleet, Vasa, right in the middle of
Stockholm during its maiden voyage. Today, the well-preserved wreck of Vasa is
on permanent public display in the Vasa Museum, relatively close to where the
ship originally sank. This book, in several languages, is actually sold in the
museum gift shop. Personally, I think this children story is difficult to read
due to strange fonts and somewhat confusing, too, but that's me. Two-and-a-half
stars?
