"Giganto: The Real King Kong" is a
slow-paced and somewhat confusing documentary about Bigfoot, written by Doug
Hajicek, the producer of "MonsterQuest". It was originally aired at
History's sister channel H2. "Giganto" features interviews with
eyewitnesses, and an expedition involving Jeff Meldrum of Idaho University
trying to find evidence of the elusive creature.
To give the show a more classy feeling, it also features a more mainstream scientist (and Bigfoot sceptic), Russel Ciochon, searching for new fossils of Gigantopithecus, an enormous primate living in East Asia during prehistoric times. The connection between the two subjects may look forced to an outsider, but many Bigfoot enthusiasts speculate that Gigantopithecus might have survived, migrated to North America and still roams the woods in the form of Bigfoot. Yet, I wonder how Ciochon feels about being shown on the same program as Bigfoot true believers?
Personally, I'm somewhat partial to the idea of a North American ape (or is it a ghoul), so I'm going to give "Giganto" three stars, but I can't say it really thrilled me. More interesting documentaries about Bigfoot and other monsters exist. Fans of Hajicek's mega-project "MonsterQuest" might like it, though.
