A review of "Field Guide to Medecinal Wild Plants"
I downloaded the free sample of this field guide to my
Kindle. It's better than its companion volume about edible wild plants, perhaps
because it doesn't really pretend to be a “field guide”, let alone a how-to
guide. Rather, it’s a mini-encyclopedia with basic information on how various
plants were actually used by Native American or early settlers, without any
pretensions that the lore is accurate. Not very useful if you want in-depth
information on the subject, but could perhaps work as a “teaser trailer” or
quick reference guide. Some of these plants are supposedly still used in the
Appalachians today. I was intrigued by the Kentucky coffee tree. It must be an
incredibly strong coffee substitute, since its powdered form is said to wake
people up from a coma! In the end, I give this book three stars.
