A review of "Birds of Peru, Revised and Updated Edition"
This is a field guide to all 1,800+ bird species found
in the South American nation of Peru, apparently a favorite hot spot for more
advanced birders (or more crazy tourists). The species presentations are very
short and only include the bare minimum necessary for identification. However,
this bare minimum does include bird sounds! The color illustrations are good,
but perhaps too small in many cases. The range maps are also small. Still, if
you want all feathered dinosaurs of this bio-geographically diverse country
under one cover (and you do, if you really want to visit Ayacucho with the
intention of watching the local birdlife), this field guide is probably a must.
The preview is great fun. Tinamous, tinamous, tinamous…sweet geezus, how many
species of tinamou can they possibly have down there??? :D
