The Great Chain of Canine Being

National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually and was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, also the founder of National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day and many more philanthropic days to bring attention to the plight of animals and encourage adoption. The date of August 26th is significant, as it's the date that Colleen's family adopted her first dog "Sheltie" when Colleen was 10 years old.

This according to a website devoted to this particular anniversary. I don't think there is any connection between Sheltie and "National Dog Day T-shirt", though. (Colleen's website sells different T-shirts). That being said, I nevertheless find this particular shirt hilarious.

"I chose dogs over people". For once, I disagree! Although I'm a notorious introvert and misanthrope, I prefer an annoying human primate to a drewling, smelly hound any time, LOL. But sure, if you want to celebrate Man's Best (and Most Hungry) Friend, this might be just what you are looking for. Note that the shirt is for humane human use...
