“Megeti” is an interesting nature documentary about
the Ethiopian Wolf, a jackal-like wolf species endemic to the Ethiopian
Highlands. The Ethiopian Wolf is heavily specialized, mostly hunting and eating
rodents. Cows ignore it when it shows up, apparently knowing that the wolf
doesn't constitute a threat! Unfortunately, the wolf lacks immunity to diseases
spread by dogs (used as livestock guardians by the local human populations).
After several epidemics, the total number of Ethiopian Wolves alive today is
only about 500 individuals.
“Megeti” follows the fate of a young female, the sole survivor of a flock wiped out by disease. Apart from the (frankly tragic) wolves, the documentary also features the gelada, the olive baboon, the blue-winged goose and the thick-billed raven. The rainforests of the Ethiopian Highlands are also home to lions. Apparently, they have never been filmed before, and virtually nothing is known about their habits.
All in all, a fascinating but also somewhat sad look at one of the world's last wilderness areas…
