"Antiquity of Man" by Michael Brass is a
sceptical book responding to Michael Cremo's and Richard Thompson's
"Forbidden Archaeology", a controversial work claiming that humanity
is considerably older than recognized by modern science. Brass is a South
African archaeologist. "Antiquity of Man" seems to be self-published,
and the author is otherwise unknown. Although Cremo's and Thompson's book is
something of an underground classic, most archaeologists and palaeontologists
don't take it seriously. Indeed, Brass' book seems to be the only one that
attempts to respond to "Forbidden Archaeology". Unfortunately, his
little book looks like a raw manuscript, peppered with undigested facts about
various hominid fossils. I agree with Bass' main arguments against Cremo and
Thompson, two members of the Hare Krishna movement whose book is written from a
somewhat exotic creationist perspective. Some have dubbed it "Krishna
creationism". However, due to the unedited character of Bass' book, I'm
afraid I can only give it two stars.
