"Not
the future we ordered" is John Michael Greer's latest book. While the book
isn't "bad", it does come across as weaker than many of his other
books. It sounds like an extensive version of one of his blog posts at The
Archdruid Report (any one of them!), or like a very condensed version of
"The Long Descent", Greer's magnum opus. If you are an avid reader of
JMG, you've heard most of it before.
The book is subtitled "Peak oil, psychology and the myth of progress", but I don't think Greer offers any deeper psychological insights. One trait about the book I dislike is the "idealist" (as opposed to materialist) tendency to blame our present predicament on bad ideas, faulty narratives and skewed psychology. How about material self-interests, including those of dominant social groups?
By all means, read this book if you find it at some alternative book fair, but for a better insight into JMG's ideas, I recommend that you invest in a copy of "The Long Descent".
