A pilgrim in an aquarium

A review of David Spangler´s "A Pilgrim in Aquarius"

Although I'm a somewhat reluctant fan of David Spangler's "real New Age", this one didn't move me. Perhaps I'm temporarily satiated. I mean, how much Aquarian love, relationship and transformation can a hard-boiled realist like me take in one sitting? I've read two Spangler books this week! Or perhaps "A Pilgrim in Aquarius" really is more tedious and boring than some of the man's other works.

For some reason, Dave has included a very unfortunate anti-millenarian screed by one Jackson Spielvogel as an appendix, in which this character (presumably a half-crazed paleo-conservative) compares the Hussites, Taborites and Anabaptists to the Nazis! They were all "millenarian", apparently. Somebody needs an appointment with Madame Guillotine or Eduard Benes...

But OK, I admit that Spangler's anecdote about presidential hopeful Jerry Brown having an election meeting on a New Age fair complete with hippies and a guy channelling pyramid energy through his hat, was entertaining. I always assumed that flat tax Jerry was the macho, hardhat type? Or was that a later spin in another primary election campaign?

Personally, I think those interested in Dave Thought should read "Subtle Worlds", "Reflections on the Christ", "Apprenticed to Spirit" and (if they are men enough) "Reimagination of the World", where Spangler's mystical Kumaras in the service of The Christ meet William Irwin Thompson's hard-boiled Irish working class background, and then some.

Sorry, Mr. Son of a CIA Agent, but only two-and-a-half stars for you this time.
