Rumpless chicken, and then some
"Rare Poultry Breeds" is a book by David Scrivener about rare chicken breeds from all over the world. It's a companion volume to Scrivener's other book, with the self-explanatory title "Popular Poultry Breeds".
I admit that some of the hens (and, I suppose, cockerels) included in this collection are pretty bizarre. How about long-tailed, rumpless, cup-combed, frizzled and naked-necked breeds? One of the naked-necked chicks comes from Transylvania, as behoves a scary creature of this kind.
I also noted that many of the rare breeds have names almost impossible to pronounce in Queen's English, such as Ostfriesische Zwerg-Möwen, Assendelftse Hoen, Westfällischer Totleger and Appenzeller Bathuhn. Or how about some chicken soup made on a Barbu du Grubbe or a Coucou de Bretagne?
And yes, there are photos and/or illustrations, mostly in colour, of many of the rare breeds exposed for posterity in this excellent little mini-encyclopaedia. Don't expect any information on cock-fighting, though. The author believes the question is too controversial for the readers, who might just chicken out over it. Another time, yes?
