This is the flag of the city
of Makiivka or Makeyevka, situated close to Donetsk in the eastern part of the
Ukraine. Makeyevka is an important metallurgical and coal-mining centre. Still
today, almost 25 years after the dissolution of the USSR, many subdivisions of
this city have distinctly Communist names, such as Soviet, Kirov, Red Guard,
Red October and Proletarian. I suppose Makeyevka is currently under the control
of the Russian-backed rebels of the "People's Republic of Donetsk".
So why would an American want to buy the flag of this god-forsaken,
Andropov-nostalgic urban settlement? Well, it turns out that one of the
superheroes of the Marvel Comics universe, Titanium Man, hails from...you
guessed it...Makeyevka. Buy this flag for your Marvel-infatuated kids!
