A review of Modern Talking´s album "Year of the Dragon".
Modern Talking is arguably the worst band in the
history of pop music. All their songs (there are hundreds of them) sound
virtually alike, even the lyrics are often similar, and their grasp of English
grammar isn't the best either (it's a German band). I'm pretty convinced that
they can't really sing. It seems that they always perform with both song and
music pre-recorded. In other words, they cheat!
And yet, we all love them over here. Why? No idea. Maybe we just have a strange sense of humour. Maybe they appeal to our heterobisexual side. Maybe we like the mad axe man in the "Cheri, cheri lady" video clip (talk about subliminal messages). It's a mystery deeper than the meaning of life.
"Year of the Dragon" is, all things considered, Modern Talking's best album. They come pretty close to being a *real* pop band on this one. Best tracks: "Don't take away my heart", "My lonely girl", "No Face, No Name, No Number", "Time is on my side", "Avec Toi" and "Fly to the moon". There is also a bonus track, featuring the indefatigable US rap star Eric Singleton, doing his best to hype "China in her eyes" (the closest thing to a title song). East Asians might be offended, however, since Singleton lumps China, Japan and Thailand together...
Modern Talking is a band you will probably hate unless you have a homosexual streak or a very strange sense of humour. Personally, I have the latter. I think this production deserves five stars. Really. ;-)
