Formerly known as Celebes

"The Ecology of Sulawesi" is the fourth volume in the series "The ecology of Indonesia". Sulawesi (called Celebes on older maps) is one of the larger islands making up the nation of Indonesia.

This book is essentially a kind of encyclopaedic reference work, covering most aspects of the environment on this particular island. There are extensive chapters on Seashores; Estuaries, seagrass meadows and coral reefs; Freshwater ecosystems; Lowland forests; Mountains; Caves; Agroecosystems and Urban ecology.

The impact of humans on the environment is also discussed, but this volume nevertheless looks less "political" than the book on Kalimantan reviewed by me elsewhere.

"The ecology of Sulawesi" is probably too much for the causal tourist (or general reader), but should be indispensable for natural scientists who for some reason want to concentrate their research to the island formerly known as Celebes...
