The mysterious return of Fancy

Fancy is a German Euro-disco singer. He was particularly popular during the 1980's. Euro-disco (sometimes called Italo-disco) is, of course, mass produced trash. The English lyrics are often incomprehensible, the synthesizers must have been programmed by rookies, and the artists often have a weird gay image. Many of them don't really sing on their own records! Essentially, they are photo models.

For whatever reason, I loved Euro-disco already as a teenager, and I still do. As for Fancy, he has always been one of the better Euro-disco stars, *almost* a real pop singer. His career seems to have been a curious one. He was very popular in Europe, certainly in Germany and Sweden, during the 1980's. Then he mysteriously disappeared. When my brother (who worked in the music business at the time) wanted to include a song by Fancy on a Euro-disco greatest hits album, he was informed that the record company Fancy was associated with no longer existed, and nobody knew who owned the copyright to his songs. So Fancy was left out of the compilation. Since Fancy is a spiritual kind of guy, who once wanted to become a monk, I assumed that he had finally left this world...for some far away monastery.

And then, maybe not. Fancy's discography at Wikipedia doesn't show any mysterious disappearance. Was somebody taking my brother for a ride? God himself, maybe?

"Fancy: Golden stars - Golden hits", released by Spectrum, is a greatest hits collection. It contains 14 tracks, including "Flames of Love", "Slice me nice", "Bolero" and "Lady of Ice". Another good track is "China Blue". Conspicuously absent from this album is "L.A.D.Y.O.".

Fancy and other Euro-disco stars should be taken with a large grain of salt. I mean, when this guy made a comeback a few years ago, he looked like the fatter version of Elvis Presley! Did anyone call National Enquirer? Still, if you are tired of the pornographic hip hop stuff on the MTV, you might actually enjoy this. Or you might consider it cultural studies...

Personally, I think Fancy made the right choice not to enter a monastery.
Not just yet, at any rate.
