Plutonium Mountain

Amazon actually sells the flag of Zheleznogorsk, a Russian town. I posted this review of the flag, speculating about its symbolism.

For years, even decades, nay, generations, people around the world have been longing to buy the actual flag of Zheleznogorsk in Krasnoiarsk krai, Russian Federation. Now, we have the next best thing: a copy of said flag brought to us by magFlags via Amazon (US branch). This pivotal moment in the history of the world (and commercial capitalism) surely calls for celebration!

I'm not a flag nerd a/k/a vexillologist, but Zheleznogorsk is the secret center of the Soviet and Russian nuclear industry, including nuclear weapons and production of plutonium. The flag shows a bear, a traditional symbol of Russia, surrounded by electron orbits. The teddy is busy cracking the nucleus of an atom. Well, I think! Note also that the bear is yellow, while the flag is red, and compare this to the colors of the Soviet flag. Nostalgia for the One Mighty, much?

Of course, I don't know if this is the actual flag of this place of marvels, or if somebody at Wikipedia is pulling our leg, but according to legit newspaper reports, Zheleznogorsk is still a "closed town". Even the locals need a permission to leave and return to the city! Presumably, they also need a permit to browse or edit Wikipedia, so who knows what kind of CIA disinformation might have filtered through...

Even so, let's all unite in awarding Iron Mountain five red stars!
Vivat!!!
