A review of Amazon´s most bizarre product...
Ahem, when I proposed that
Amazon should show itself a daring defender of free and completely irresonsible
speech, and actually sell the flag of the Khmer Rouge, I was JOKING, for crying
out loud!!! But here it is, then, the flag flown by one of the worst genocidal
regimes in world history, bar none.
Note also the following, shall we say, ironies: the Khmer Rouge came to power following indiscriminate U.S. bombings of Cambodia, they were overthrown by the competing Communist regime of Vietnam, and they were subsequently supported by Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and the “world community” as part of the Cold War II build-up against the Soviet Union. Note also that the present-day Buddhist-monarchist rulers of Cambodia were *allies* of the Khmer Rouge!
These are the reasons, I think, why it took decades to convict the Khmer Rouge leaders for their crimes. Cambodia was liberated by the wrong side in the Cold War. Yes, the Maoist version of Communism upheld by Pol Pot and his henchmen was very, very bizarre...but great power politics are scarcely any better.
And now, please take down this flag.
