“Meet the Coywolf” is a documentary about a new species of carnivore, the Eastern coyote or coywolf, a hybrid between the standard coyote and the wolf.
Throughout most of their respective territories, wolves and coyotes are enemies
and competitors. In northern Ontario, by contrast, natural selection have taken
an unexpected turn: the isolated wolf population breeds true with coyotes to
replenish itself, even forming pair bonds and packs with a creature they
usually chase or even kill!
Unfortunately for man (the “dominant” species on this rock), the coywolf has
spread to urban areas in both Canada and the United States. They don't mind
resting close to heavily trafficked highways, roam in parks and suburban areas,
and have an abundance of food at their disposal, such as raccoons and other
wild species going urban. And yes, the coywolf is smart and aggressive towards
humans.
Apart from coywolves, the documentary also follows a group of scientist which
studies the spread of the regular coyote in urban areas.
The most disturbing aspect of the situation is the complacency of the humans,
who seem to think that coyotes and coywolves are cute, and don't mind having
them around residential areas or children playgrounds…
I suppose that's a form of “natural selection”, too. Personally, I would join
the NRA!
