A huge step for Smurfkind

The Smurfs are adorable little blue leprechauns, created by Franco-Belgian comic writer Peyo. They live in a quiet village with mushroom-like houses, ruled by the benign patriarch Papa Smurf, who looks like Santa Claus. Quiet? Well, until somebody creates mischief, that is! Or starts singing…

The plot of “The Astrosmurf” revolves around Dreamy Smurf, whose most ardent wish is to travel to other planets. Papa Smurf's learned books don't exactly help. They only contain pretty bizarre suggestions about how to master interplanetary travel, such as placing salt on the tail of a comet, or making a cat say “Selakejuhevalehepaotrehupar” thrice (at least in the Swedish translation!) Being the modern progressive type who doesn't believe in Old Way Magick, Dreamy Smurf builds his very own human-powered rocket (or should we call it Smurf-powered) and eventually manages to reach a distant world inhabited by mysterious creatures called Swoops. A small step for a Smurf, and a huge one for Smurfkind!

But perhaps the Swoops aren't what they seem to be…

A humorous detail: in the original version the Swoops were dark-brown with large lips, clearly being a native tribe of some kind. In the new American version, the Swoops are green instead, making them look more like real aliens (“little green men”).

This album also includes “The Smurf Submarine”, a story I'm not familiar with. OK, let me guess. The submarine is yellow? :P
