A review of a very obscure flag on sale from Amazon.
This is not the flag of the
independent republic of Benin, but rather a super-obscure banner used by the
“Republic of Benin” in southern Nigeria during the Biafran War. The name is
taken from the largest town in the region, Benin City. The city and surrounding
areas were controlled by Biafran military forces from August to September 1967.
Nominal independence was declared on 19 September 1967. The new state, headed
by a Governor, collapsed already on 20 September, as Nigerian troops retook the
territory. Governor Albert Okonkwo fled with the retreating Biafran troops. The
flag is similar to that of Biafra. If you love Frederick Forsyth, this might be
your thing. Otherwise,
probably not.
