“Zionism and Anti-Semitism” is
a pamphlet published circa 1900 (my edition has no publication date). The
authors, the German Jew Max Nordau and the American Jewish rabbi, Gustav
Gottheil, were both prominent Zionists. Nordau is also known as a cultural
critic and novelist. Personally, I don't think the pamphlet is very
interesting. Nordau's article is an introduction to the history, aims and
activities of the Zionist movement. Gottheil's article is a polemic against
anti-Semitism, which he believes is somehow anti-Christian, since the Bible is
“Semitic”. But yes, perhaps I'm being unfair. I'm looking at the text with the
benefit of hindsight. Today, most Jews are Zionists and have their own state in
Palestine. Thus, we heard all of this before (also, Nordau seems to follow
Theodore Herzl's arguments in “Der Judenstaat” closely). Nordau's and
Gottheil's text were probably more controversial when published, since Zionism
was then very much a fringe movement. I will give this opus three stars. For
your private Zionist reference library only.
