Hail Hydra, Hail Victory

Full disclosure: I bought this comic book mostly because of the “culture war” it generated when first published, between the so-called SJWs and their Alt Right detractors.

The first half of the story didn't disappoint. The bad guys, the organization Hydra, turns out to have a rhetoric strikingly similar to that of the Alt Right (surprise!), while using the same terrorist tactics as ISIS or Al-Qaeda. Since there are no Islamist terrorists in the story, we're supposed to conclude that the far right, or perhaps Trump voters, are the real nemesis. A peculiar fact I noticed, though, is that some of the Hydra Nazi terrorists are Black! I'm not sure what *that* is supposed to mean?! Toxic masculinity is there, too: the leaders of the anti-Hydra secret service are womyn, while all terrorists seem to be based men (except for an evil psychic).

The second half of the story is less interesting, at least from a pseudo-political viewpoint, although it might mean something to avid fans of the franchise. Captain America apparently gets brainwashed by Hydra and joins the terror network as their mind slave...unless he is faking the whole thing. The story ends inconclusively, so those who absolutely want to know how it continues, have to procure Vol 2. Funny detail: the “sentient cosmic cube”, named Kobik, manifest as a little girl and is given a Cthulhu doll by the Hydra leader Red Skull!

OK, enough Marvel comics for the season, I think.
