From Vladstradamus with love

I've seen one of the episodes of this series, "Countdown to Apocalypse", aired on History Channel in December 2012, no doubt to cater to those seriously worried about the supposed Mayan predictions about the end of the world on December 21. Well, we're still here, so obviously somebody somewhere got it all wrong, but I'm not sure if it were the Mayans... Crackpot American TV networks are more likely culprits!

The series claim that something cataclysmic is about to happen on December 21, probably connected to the sun, and that the Mayans knew all about it. Massive solar flares that cause a permanent global blackout? Rapid climate change for the worse? Melting polar caps causing super-earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? Insect swarms? The "countdown to apocalypse" is said to be "in full swing", as History Channel takes us to a survivalist booty camp known as Sigma 3, where the usual militia guys are prepping for whatever they think will happen... (They still are.)

Frankly, I was annoyed when watching this. Sure, it's a free country, but where is the responsible reporting? We have enough problems already (peak oil, anyone?) and certainly don't need a bunch of phoney doomsday prophets on prime time. As usual, Russian president Vladimir Putin alias Vladstradamus is the voice of reason when America screws up, so as a counterpoint to History-is-over Channel, please watch the clip "Putin: I know when the world will end" at Youtube.

Ha ha ha.

Incidentally, I intend to be here next year as well, same time!
