We are the superior beings

"Doctorin' the Tardis" might be the most bizarre pop song ever to reach number one position on the British charts. The year was 1988, and the band was The Timelords, otherwise known as The KLF, the JAMs or (wait for it) The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu. "Doctorin' the Tardis" is a weird tune, combining the theme music from the British TV series "Doctor Who" with Garry Glitter's "Rock'n'Roll". Don't ask me why! Perhaps The Timelords had gotten tired of parodying "The Illuminatus Trilogy"?

Avid fans of "Doctor Who" know that the Tardis is a time machine disguised as a police box, a special phone boot used to place alarm calls to the police. Hence the (rather shabby) police cab at the CD cover. The villains of the series, the murderous Daleks, are sampled in the song. The band name Timelords is a reference to powerful immortal beings in "Doctor Who". However, "Doctorin' the Tardis" have no real connection to the series per se.

The unexpected success of the song prompted The Timelords to release a satirical book about how to reach the top of the British charts. I haven't read it, and I have no particular intention of doing so either. The Timelords ended their career in 1994 by literally burning one million pounds sterling as an artistic happening. That's when we started to hate them...

Yet, for old times sake, I nevertheless must give this absurd turkey scorcher...fiiiiive stars. I mean, back in 1988 both me and my brother ROFL-ed when we saw the video clip!
