I admit that I never heard of birthwort before, but then, I virtually never use alternative medicine. Maybe just as good, in this particular case!
The RationalWiki entry linked below argues that birthwort is dangerous, pure and simple, and yet this danger wasn´t discovered until relatively recently by modern science. Traditional herbal-based medicine such as Ayurveda or Chinese medicine knew nothing about it. Kidney failure seems to be a common side effect.
It seems Aristolochia is best left to caterpillars...
