The recent attack by Hamas on Israel is probably connected to Iran´s attempts to achieve regional hegemony in the Middle East. Part of that would be to disrupt the "Abraham accords" between Israel and the Gulf states. Or a normalization process between Israel and any Muslim state. Russia might be in on it, too, Iran being a Russian ally.
While dramatic (and humiliating for Israel), I don´t think anyone seriously thinks Hamas can defeat Israel. Rather, the point is to increase the pressure...and create diplomatic/geopolitical havoc in the region and beyond.
Why didn´t Israel see this coming? I wouldn´t be surprised if conspiracy theories about Netanyahu´s "foreknowledge" will soon start spinning. The Israeli PM will no doubt blame the failure on "leftists" in the IDF and Mossad...
And yes, today is Putin´s birthday.
October surprise, anyone?
