I´m rather late to this controversy, but here you go...
The fourth comment after the article contains absolutely priceless formulations, such as this one: "I used the word “shit” that Kripal’s enterprise dug into but concentrating on Ramakrishna’s posterior. The saint himself was obsessed with the anus and its contents."
Although I´m not a supporter of the Ramakrishna Mission, I have to say that they do give a more sympathetic impression than many other religious groups. Imagine an article like this in a Hare Krishna magazine! Not likely...
Jeffrey Kripal is probably an interesting cat, all things considered, I mean he co-wrote a book with Whitley Strieber, who is arguably even crazier than Ramakrishna! :D
I un-ironically believe that Ramakrishna, Kripal and Strieber could have had an interesting conversation (in Bengali perhaps?), had the mad saint still been around...

The foreword to "Interpreting Ramakrishna" is actually written by our old friend Huston Smith!
