The Zuma Insurrection

An interesting article from "Jacobin Magazine" about the recent unrest in South Africa. It´s not some kind of festival of the oppressed, legitimate looting or whatever. Rather, it´s a quasi-coup carried out by supporters of former president Jacob Zuma, who are closer to Mexican drug cartels than to valiant fighters for the down-trodden.

The article calls on the ANC government to restore law and order, while also pointing out that President Ramaphosa´s austerity measures have created a fertile ground for Zuma´s provocations. This "military but not political support" to the South African government (and military) might be controversial.

Note the comments on the "taxi mafia" and the White, Indian or Colored vigilantes. Note also the ethnic component of the unrest (Zuma and his supporters are Zulus).

  2. What a rainbow of races in that picture. I say that without irony.
