A huge explosion destroyed a large grain silo in the Turkish port of Derince about three hours ago. It could be a co-incidence, of course. I mean, accidents do happen.
Especially at important port facilities controlled by the Turkish government just two weeks after said government declared it will import more grain, in a tense geopolitical situation in which both Russia and Ukraine want to export - guess what - grain, and the Russians have just bombed a Ukrainian port to stop said export from that country.
Especially then, I say, grain silos in Turkey just go wham bam. Turkey is a NATO member which somewhat anomalously have good relations (kind of) with both Russia and Ukraine...
Nobody knows what happened (yet). It could be an accident. If so, I wonder about the safety precautions in Derince. Can some ILO official please weigh in on this? But I don´t think we can rule out terrorists or state actors either...
Almost everyone seems to have a vested interest in seeing the shit explode. Including rogue grain merchants who want to fix the prices!
We are monitoring the situation.
