I kill with my heart

"The Dark Tower" is an American dark fantasy flick from 2017. Or perhaps a slightly more violent version of a tween-teen flick? It´s freely based on a series of novels by Stephen King which I haven´t read, and probably never will.

The legend at the center of the plot is clearly based on Norse mythology, with "the dark tower" really being Yggdrasil or the World Tree. Note also that one of the dimensions of reality is called Mid-World. There are also similarities with LOTR. Frankly, the entire storyline feels very familiar! So does the story´s devil-figure, the Man in Black. Ironically, he is the least interesting character, more ridiculous than really scary.

Together with a host of bizarre minions, the Man in Black (his real name turns out to be Walter!) wants to destroy the dark tower, which will unleash demons from beyond the known universe, demons Walter hopes to control in order to become the evil autocrat of everything that exists. The tower is attacked by the harvested psychic powers of abducted human children. Unfortunately for our wanna-be Loki, one of the most psychic kids, Jake Chambers, manages to escape before being taken into custody (this part of the plot is set in modern New York City). After teleporting himself to Mid-World, Jake teams up with Roland, the last surviving member of a Jedi-like brotherhood known as the Gunslingers, who devoted their lives to fight the Man in Black. Roland seems to prefer flashy handguns to light sabers, though!

After the usual plot holes, the stage is finally set for a dramatic last battle between Roland + Jake versus Walter, a battle that ends surprisingly quickly at which point the ordered cosmos is saved until somebody sees fits to make a sequel...

OK, maybe not my favorite production.
