In 1886, Mormon prophet John Taylor issued a "revelation" stating that polygamy is an everlasting covenant that can never be revoked. Which of course it was just a few years later. So the Mormon Church started denying that the revelation even existed...despite having a transcript in their archives.
Later, they even got hold of the original version (from a plural wife of John Taylor´s son John W Taylor) but classified it. Obviously, since it confirmed the fundamentalist version of Mormon theology!
Recently, the old revelation was declassified but without much fanfare, perhaps because the topic is still somewhat sensitive. Interesting religion, this, which classifies and denies the "divine revelations" of its own prophets for reasons of politic and (perhaps) theology...
I guess being "possessed by God" can have its ups and downs!
ReplyDeleteEspecially if "God" is supposed to possess an entire Church institution!
