On the campaign trail

Me, trying to sit out the POTUS elections

The election campaign in the US is heating up. Links below are to the pro-Trump Breitbart News site. Some cynical comments...

Even if the allegations against Walz about Chinese ties are true, I´m pretty sure most American politicians did pretty much the same thing until, say, 10 years ago. So the only difference would be that Walz was stupid enough to continue in the same vein throughout the Trump years.

As for pro-Palestinian activists not voting for Kamala Harris...LOL. What are the chances? So probably a nothingburger. But sure, the slogan "Kamala, you can´t hide, we won´t vote for genocide" is almost bizarrely brilliant. I mean, who´s behind it? The Revolutionary Communist Party? The Revolutionary Workers League? Dude!

The polling results from Pennsylvania (an important swing state) are strange. Note that voters under 40 prefer Trump with a 18-point margin! Less surprising, perhaps, is that atheists overwhelmingly (84%) support Harris. If Robert F Kennedy Jr is included in the polls, Trump and Harris are tied at 47% each of the total Pennsylvanian vote. So perhaps RFK Jr can still play a role in the November elections? Or at least create havoc!

And it´s only August. Still awaiting the October surprise with much fear and trembling...

Heart and horn

What are the origins of the pope´s mitre and similar headgear worn by other bishops, both Catholic and non-Catholic? You´ll never guess it. Hint: it has nothing to do with the god Mithras, which I kind of assumed. Nor is there any connection to Dagon (never heard that one) and probably not to the mouth of a fish (a Christian symbol).

The actual history of the mitre and its symbolism is far stranger and includes a period in art history when Moses was depicted wearing...horns?! Yes, really.

Drunk as a skunk

Was the atheist debate bro drunk when he wrote this? Note also the discussion thread. Duuuuuuude!

The argument from non-locality

The archangel of many names

A short and somewhat in-house piece by Jesus Mythicist Richard Carrier, arguing that Jesus and Michael were the same angelic personage. In early Christian theology, obviously! The evidence isn´t conclusive, but it remains a tantalizing possibility. "I´m not saying Jesus is Michael, I´m just saying that nobody has seen Jesus and Michael in the same room at the same time".

Of course, Carrier connects the angelomorphic character of Jesus to the Mythicist claim that no historical person named "Jesus" ever existed. Note also that if Carrier is right, the dying and rising god-man would have been a Jewish/Biblical idea, not an external pagan influence. Which is a *Christian* idea, here secularized and turned into creative mythology. To our atheist author, this simply means that Christianity was one of many quirky Jewish sects.

Carrier also points out that the Jehovah´s Witnesses identify Jesus and Michael. So the Witnesses might be right (!) on this particular point.

Was Jesus-is-Michael an early Christian mystery teaching?

The Angel of the Face

The seemingly crazy idea that Jesus and Yahweh were the same person is actually the official position of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Of course, they combine it with the Trinity. In a very different way, the Mormons also argue that Jesus and Yahweh are the same.

That is, both Orthodox and Mormons argue that Yahweh was "the Son" rather than "the Father". So what Carrier writes here is no news...unless you are a Western Christian (Catholic or theologically mainstream Protestant), who indeed argue that Yahweh was the Father.

I admit that many things fall into place when you make the assumption that early Christians assumed that *Jesus* was speaking through the "Old Testament" writings...

Kris i befolkningsfrågan
