Is the oft-repeated claim of a strong religious revival among Generation Z just a mirage. Or perhaps disinformation? According to this video (which seems solid), there simply is no such revival. The real trend goes in the opposite direction: the number of non-religious people increase in every generation. At least in the United Kingdom and the United States, where many of the "Gen Z revival" claims originate. At most, there is a plateau: the downward trend has stabilized...at the lowest level so far. The content-creator argues that this is temporary and that the trend will continue downward at some point, since children of the non-religious tend to stay non-religious (at about 90%).
The only thing that would break the trend would be a *massive* revival. In the US, a staggering 18 million GenZers would have to (re)join the Christian Churches for the curve to point upwards again. No such revival has happened in the past 50 years or so. Nor are there any signs that it´s happening now.
I have two comments. First, I´m a born contrarian, so for a moment I was a bit worried that my recent interest in religion/spirituality was actually the norm. Thank god (pun intended) it isn´t! LOL. However, there is a fallacy in this video: the idea that everything in society will just remain as before, for another 50 or 100 years. It´s not stated clearly, but it´s certainly implied.
I find that *very* difficult to believe. In reality, world civilization is heading for a crash. Nobody can predict exactly what will happen. But maybe that crash will be just enough to make 18 million members of Gen Z more religious. If they will become Christians, or whether that revival will even be a good thing, is another matter entirely...
Oh, and another thing. If current population trends are anything to go by, most of Europe will be West African in 100 years. So perhaps the real question is: is there a revival in Gambia, Ghana or Nigeria?
