Lost in the Aedicule

Two interesting YouTube clips about the empty tomb of Jesus. I linked to the first one already last year. It deals with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The church is built around the supposed tomb of Jesus. It´s recognized by Catholics and the Orthodox, while many Protestants are skeptical.

The second clip tells the rest of the story: in another part of Jerusalem, there is another ancient grave some Protestants believe (or want to believe) is the actual resting place of Christ. It´s called the Garden Tomb or Gordon´s Tomb (named after the 19th century British war hero Charles Gordon. Or war criminal, if you were on the receiving end of his graces). Apparently, the Mormons also accept it.

The narrator, who is a real scholar of religion, points out that the Garden Tomb does appeal to the aesthetical sensibilities of Protestants. I agree: after watching x number of Jesus movies, this is more or less how you expect the tomb provided by Joseph of Arimatea to look like. The Church of the Holy Grave, by contrast, is far removed from the Protestant aesthetic (obviously!).

Needless to say, there is no real evidence for any of the sites being genuine (even apart from the fact that modern historians don´t accept the resurrection anyway), although the first clip does discuss some tantalizing possibilities...

Happy Easter Monday, btw.
